"Ya'll are making the 600 residents of St. Paul a little unhappy with your listing us as a "Ghost Town."  I'm going to post your link on the local community page.  The 1,500+ members might be sending you mail."

R&R Brogan
St. Paul, KS

Depending on exactly which reference you accept, a "ghost town" is described as a town that has lost its primary founding industry and has lost at least 80 percent of its high population count due to that loss. That could be logging, mining, ranching, farming, manufacturing, fishing, or any other industry. A ghost town can be an "classic" abandoned town (like Bodie, CA). Other situations would include vacant land that was once a town, rubble and foundations, "near" ghost towns (towns that once were large, bustlling towns that have since lost their luster, commonly called economically depressed). There are a few other "classifications" that people have come up with over the years to fit their own needs. Therefore, a town does not have to be a classic movie set-type ghost town to be "labeled" as such. In some cases, a renewed influx of people will "upgrade" a "ghost" town. But, the history of the town remains, none the less. Tombstone, Arizona is a good example of this. Deadwood, SD is another. There are many examples of this. I provide references in books that list ghost towns, so that intrerested people know where to get more information. I do not know the criteria an author uses to include any particular town in his/her books, but I do not censur what the author says. Since St. Paul is listed in at least one publication as a ghost town, it will remain here with your letter and this description. Who knows, maybe somebody may want to visit there. -Mark Prewitt
